Message from Peter Moore

This Easter, which arrives very early this year, marks Radio Caroline’s 44th birthday and heralds in my 22nd year of full time work for the station.

A couple of days ago I attended, with Caroline’s founder Ronan O’Rahilly, the funeral of Chris (Spangles Muldoon) Cary, a colourful man and legendary Caroline personality. We realised that the date of
the funeral was also the 28th anniversary of the sinking of our well loved ship Mi Amigo.

In January of this year we mourned the loss of my good friend Rob Leighton, a notable Caroline broadcaster, while late in 07 I had to bid farewell to another fine friend, our brave supply boat captain Dave (The Fish) Turner.

It does seem that time is starting to take its toll and it seems ever more important to re-establish Radio Caroline, while we are all still around to enjoy it.

The radio industry is at an interesting stage. A terrestrial licence is not the sure path to easy profit that it once was. Conventional platforms such as AM are losing ground, but the much hyped DAB seems to be faltering, as major radio groups either question, or turn away from it and others question the quality and reliability of the signals. DRM remains an interesting, but mostly experimental concept.

Conversely, Internet Radio, once regarded as a foolish novelty for computer geeks, is streaking ahead, with Wi-Fi radio sets giving access to many thousands of stations. The Caroline listening audience on this medium has quadrupled in the last two years without our having to have done anything other than to be available on line.

We are about to start a survey of our Sky listening and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

It is no secret that making the station visible to the general public by taking Sky channel 0199 was a costly move. While it was the next logical step in our expansion, we have had no spare budget for further advancement since June 2006. Further, while living from hand to mouth is exciting, it does become wearing after a while.

So, we are again using Easter as a recruitment drive, seeking new supporters or those who may make a single or occasional donation. I think it is known by now that all income to Caroline is used honestly and efficiently and that the way we operate ensures that even a small sum can create a disproportionately larger result.

I would be personally grateful if you will assist us. I hope that my 22 years of work establishes my credibility.

We are so tantalisingly close to further expansion and as I say, time is finite. If we can return Caroline to full prominence while we are still around to enjoy the victory, this would satisfy me that my time has been well spent.

Happy Easter,

Peter Moore
